Background of the Study

The judiciary plays a fundamental role in interpreting, enforcing, and upholding media laws to maintain press freedom, accountability, and ethical journalism. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, the judiciary’s role in regulating media practices is critical, particularly in a socio-political context characterized by diverse media landscapes and varying levels of adherence to legal frameworks. Media laws, including those governing defamation, libel, and press freedom, require judicial oversight to balance the rights of the press with the protection of individuals and institutions. However, challenges such as judicial inefficiency, political interference, and inconsistent application of laws undermine the judiciary's effectiveness in enforcing media regulations (Okafor & Yusuf, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the judiciary's role in enforcing media laws in Kano Municipal, highlighting its impact on media practices and public trust.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the existence of media laws aimed at fostering accountability and ethical journalism, their enforcement in Kano Municipal is often inconsistent. Judicial inefficiencies, coupled with political pressures, result in selective enforcement, undermining both media credibility and public trust. While the judiciary has the potential to serve as a guarantor of press freedom and ethical standards, limited empirical research explores its effectiveness in this role within Kano Municipal (Bello & Suleiman, 2024; Adebayo, 2023). This study investigates these issues, focusing on the judiciary's influence on media practices and legal compliance.
